Ocean Beach Dog Beach: Off-Leash Rules, Parking & Access

Ocean Beach Dog Beach is San Diego’s dedicated 24-hour off-leash beach for dogs. It sits at the north end of Ocean Beach near the San Diego River Floodway, and it is one of the simplest coastal options in the city because dogs are allowed off leash within the designated dog-beach area at any time.

Where Is Ocean Beach Dog Beach?

Dog Beach is at the northern end of Ocean Beach, next to the San Diego River Floodway and near the foot of Voltaire Street. The City describes it as the sandy dog-run area at the north end of the beach.

For driving directions, use Google Maps for Ocean Beach Dog Beach.

Is Ocean Beach Dog Beach Off Leash?

Yes. The City of San Diego identifies Dog Beach as a leash-free dog area where dogs are permitted without a leash within the designated beach section. Owners remain responsible for controlling and cleaning up after their dogs.

That off-leash permission does not extend to all of Ocean Beach. Standard dog rules apply outside the designated Dog Beach area, so pay attention to the posted boundaries when entering or leaving.

Ocean Beach Dog Beach Hours

The City currently identifies Ocean Beach Dog Beach as a 24-hour beach for dogs. That is a major difference from most general San Diego beaches, where dog access is restricted during daytime hours and dogs must be leashed when they are permitted.

You can verify current rules on the official City of San Diego Ocean Beach page and the City dog-beach information page.

Parking at Ocean Beach Dog Beach

The official San Diego tourism resource lists public parking at the foot of Voltaire Street and another lot at the north end of the beach and Dog Beach. Additional beach lots and street parking are available elsewhere in Ocean Beach.

Parking demand can be much higher on warm weekends, holidays, and during Ocean Beach events. If the Dog Beach lot is full, be prepared to use legal street parking farther inland and walk to the beach rather than relying on one specific lot.

For current routing, use Google Maps near Ocean Beach Dog Beach.

What Facilities Are Nearby?

The City lists Ocean Beach amenities including parking, restrooms, showers, lifeguard services, and public transportation. Not every amenity is necessarily inside the dog-run area itself, so treat these as Ocean Beach facilities rather than assuming every feature is directly beside the off-leash section.

Dog Beach vs. Other San Diego Dog Beaches

Ocean Beach Dog Beach is the easiest choice when you want a dedicated, always-available off-leash ocean beach. Fiesta Island offers a much larger leash-optional shoreline and open-space experience in Mission Bay, Coronado has a designated off-leash dog beach, and Del Mar uses seasonal rules.

Compare all four in our Dog Beaches in San Diego guide. For Mission Bay specifically, see Fiesta Island with Dogs. For Coronado, use our Coronado Dog Beach guide.

Pair Dog Beach With a Nearby Dog Park

If you want a traditional park rather than sand and surf, Dusty Rhodes Dog Park is nearby in the Ocean Beach/Point Loma area. It is a designated off-leash park and gives you a very different setting from Dog Beach.

See Dusty Rhodes Dog Park for its current City-listed hours and location details, or compare more choices in Dog Parks in San Diego.

Rules to Remember

  • Keep your dog within the designated Dog Beach area when off leash.
  • Remain responsible for your dog’s control.
  • Clean up after your dog.
  • Follow posted beach regulations for items such as glass, smoking, littering, and overnight camping.

For the broader city rules that apply outside designated dog beaches, see the City of San Diego beach regulations.

Planning an Ocean Beach Dog Outing

Dog Beach can work as the main destination for a short outing or as part of a longer Ocean Beach day. If you want coffee before or after the beach, our Dog-Friendly Cafes in San Diego guide can help identify confirmed dog-friendly stops.
