Dog Beaches in San Diego: Locations & Off-Leash Rules

San Diego County has several well-known beaches and shoreline areas where dogs are allowed, but the rules are not the same everywhere. Ocean Beach Dog Beach and Fiesta Island are City of San Diego leash-free areas, Coronado has a designated off-leash Dog Beach, and Del Mar changes dog access by season and beach section.

Ocean Beach Dog Beach

Ocean Beach Dog Beach is the most straightforward San Diego option if you want a designated off-leash beach. The City of San Diego describes Dog Beach at the north end of Ocean Beach as a dog-run area where dogs are permitted without a leash and identifies it as a 24-hour beach for dogs.

The dog beach sits at the west end of the San Diego River Floodway near the foot of Voltaire Street. Standard dog laws apply on other portions of Ocean Beach, so do not assume the entire beach is leash-free.

See our full Ocean Beach Dog Beach guide for access, parking context, rules, and map links. The City’s current beach information is on its official Ocean Beach page.

Fiesta Island

Fiesta Island in Mission Bay is a different kind of dog outing. The City currently describes the island as leash optional across shoreline and interior spaces except for restricted areas. Dogs are not allowed at the Youth Aquatic Center/Camp, and protected nesting areas have permanent and seasonal closures.

The City’s dedicated dog-access page currently lists Fiesta Island as open daily from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Some other City pages still show different opening times, so use the most specific current page and posted gate information when planning an early visit.

Read Fiesta Island with Dogs for a more detailed look at the leash-optional areas and restrictions. You can also check the City of San Diego dog beach and Mission Bay rules.

Coronado Dog Beach

Coronado permits dogs off leash only within its designated Dog Beach at the north end of Coronado Beach. The City of Coronado lists Dog Beach at 200 Ocean Boulevard and states that dogs may be off leash in the designated beach area but must be leashed before they reach it.

Dogs are not allowed on other areas of Coronado Beach, so it is important to enter and exit through the appropriate route while keeping your dog leashed outside the dog-run boundary.

For a destination-specific guide, see Coronado Dog Beach. Current municipal information is available from the City of Coronado dog rules page.

Del Mar Dog Beach / North Beach

Del Mar requires more planning because dog rules change by season and by section of beach.

For North Beach, from 29th Street north to the Solana Beach border, the City of Del Mar currently allows off-leash dogs throughout the off season, defined as the day after Labor Day through June 15. During peak season, June 16 through Labor Day, off-leash use is limited to dawn through 8 a.m.; dogs must be leashed at other times.

Other sections of Del Mar have different rules. During peak season, dogs are not allowed between Powerhouse Park and 29th Street, while South Beach has year-round leashed-dog access. Check the City of Del Mar dog-friendly beaches page before visiting because the boundary and seasonal details matter.

What About Other San Diego Beaches?

General City of San Diego beaches are not automatically dog friendly all day. Current city regulations prohibit dogs on beaches, boardwalks, and adjacent parks during specified daytime hours, with different restricted hours in winter and the warmer season. Outside those restricted hours, dogs must be leashed unless you are in a designated leash-free area such as Dog Beach or Fiesta Island.

The City currently states that from November 1 through March 31, dogs are not allowed on general beach areas between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. From April 1 through October 31, the restricted period runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. At other permitted times, dogs must remain leashed.

Check the City of San Diego beach regulations for current rules before taking a dog to a non-designated beach.

Which Dog Beach Should You Choose?

  • Choose Ocean Beach Dog Beach if you want a dedicated 24-hour dog beach with ocean access.
  • Choose Fiesta Island if you want a much larger leash-optional shoreline and open-space outing in Mission Bay.
  • Choose Coronado Dog Beach if you want a designated off-leash beach at the north end of Coronado’s shoreline.
  • Choose Del Mar North Beach if you are in North County and can plan around the seasonal leash rules.

Dog Parks Beyond the Beach

If sand and water are not the priority, San Diego also has designated inland and neighborhood leash-free spaces. Compare them in our Dog Parks in San Diego guide, including Dusty Rhodes Dog Park near Ocean Beach.
