Fiesta Island With Dogs: Off-Leash Areas, Hours & Rules
Fiesta Island is one of San Diego’s largest dog-friendly outdoor spaces and one of the city’s two major leash-free shoreline destinations. Dogs may be on or off leash across most of the island, but several protected and youth-camp areas are restricted.

Are Dogs Allowed Off Leash on Fiesta Island?
Yes. The City of San Diego’s current Fiesta Island information says dogs may roam on or off leash across the island, while the City’s dog-access page describes the shoreline and interior as leash optional except for specific restricted areas.
Fiesta Island is therefore very different from most of Mission Bay Park, where dog access is limited by time of day and leashes are required when dogs are permitted.
Fiesta Island Hours
The dedicated City of San Diego Fiesta Island page currently lists daily access from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.. It also posts special-event opening changes on certain dates.
An important detail is that another City leash-free locations page still lists Fiesta Island as 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Because official pages currently conflict, we recommend using the dedicated Fiesta Island page for the latest posted schedule and checking the entrance gate if you are planning a very early visit.
Where Dogs Are Not Allowed
Fiesta Island is dog friendly, but it is not unrestricted everywhere. The City currently identifies several areas where dogs are not permitted.
- Two California least tern nesting sites enclosed by locked gates are off limits year-round.
- Dogs are not permitted at the Youth Aquatic Center/Camp, whether leashed or unleashed.
- Two buffer zones around nesting sites close annually from April 15 through September 15.
Use the City’s dog beach and Mission Bay rules page for the current restriction details and seasonal nesting information.
Getting to Fiesta Island
Fiesta Island is inside Mission Bay and is reached by road from East Mission Bay Drive. The island is large enough that your exact destination matters, especially if you want the fenced dog off-leash area or a particular shoreline section.
Use Google Maps for Fiesta Island Dog Park for navigation.
Parking on Fiesta Island
Parking is distributed around the island rather than concentrated in one conventional urban parking lot. Because special events, races, and annual maintenance can change access, check the City’s Fiesta Island page before driving over on an event day.
The City also posts special opening times for major events, which is particularly important if you are planning an early-morning dog outing.
Fiesta Island vs. Ocean Beach Dog Beach
Both are City of San Diego leash-free shoreline options, but they provide very different experiences. Ocean Beach Dog Beach is a dedicated ocean beach at the north end of Ocean Beach. Fiesta Island is a much larger Mission Bay park with shoreline, open interior space, roads, and event areas.
If you want an ocean-beach setting with straightforward 24-hour dog-beach access, read our Ocean Beach Dog Beach guide. For a wider comparison, see Dog Beaches in San Diego.
Fiesta Island and Other Mission Bay Dog Rules
Do not assume Fiesta Island’s leash-optional rules apply to all of Mission Bay. Other Mission Bay areas have seasonal time restrictions, and dogs must remain leashed when they are permitted outside Fiesta Island.
The City currently states that general Mission Bay dog access is restricted during daytime hours, with longer restrictions from April through October. Check the official Mission Bay dog-access rules before moving from Fiesta Island to another part of the bay.
